Nobu Residences Toronto featured in designlines magazine as one of the “10 Toronto Condos on the Rise” that will transform the city’s skyline:

“Poised to breathe new life into Toronto’s Entertainment District, Madison Group broke ground on Nobu Residences Toronto in mid-2017. Publicized by Nobu Hospitality co-founder and actor Robert De Niro, the development launch promised a new Toronto landmark dedicated to luxury, the incorporation of historical facades from the Pilkington Glass Factory and the fusion of striking architectural details in a contemporary aesthetic. 700 rental units will span two distinct 156-metre towers and a podium complete with indoor and outdoor amenities including commercial retail, an outdoor Zen Garden and, of course, Toronto’s first Nobu restaurant.”

60 Richmond Street East Housing Development featured as one of “10 Innovative Affordable Housing Designs for Sustainable Living” by Architizer:

“Designed for residents employed in Toronto’s restaurant and hospitality industry,
60 Richmond Street aims to be a model for affordable housing that goes beyond simply providing an economical place to live. Not only does the urban infill project use reclaimed materials and energy-saving strategies to keep a low cost of maintenance, but it also features a resident-owned and operated restaurant and training kitchen on the ground floor. Vegetables, fruit, and herbs grown on the sixth floor terrace help residents hone their professional skills and supply the restaurant with food. Not to mention, the dynamic cut-in façade makes a nice contrast to the typical bland aesthetic of condo buildings.”

The Queen & Ashbridge revitalization is a redevelopment of Toronto Community Housing Corporation’s (TCHC) existing Don Summerville Apartments at Queen Street and Coxwell Avenue. The revitalization will create quality affordable and market housing within a new mixed-use, mixed-income community. The new development will replace the existing 120 TCHC units and increase the total number of residential units to 770 with a mix of rent-geared-to-income and affordable housing units for TCHC and market-rate condos and rentals. The design makes use of terracing to break up the overall building mass and to reflect the scale and rhythm of the neighboring Queen Street. A ‘valley’ between the two towers maximizes natural light and views to Lake Ontario from both the residential units and the courtyard.

Recently Queen & Ashbridge was featured as one of the “best new eco-friendly condos…” by Designlines magazine.

We are thrilled to share that the Edmonton Public Library’s Stanley A. Milner Library Renewal is featured on the cover and in this month’s Canadian Architect magazine.

We have enjoyed working with EPL and our consultant team to create an innovative and welcoming civic hub. The renovation and expansion actively supports the library’s position as a social and creative destination, enhancing EPL’s values of openness and inclusion. The reshaped library’s interior embodies a shift in library services, focusing users towards community engagement as well as reading.

The article written by Trevor Boddy is worth the read.

In a recent Canadian Architect article, Principals Avery Guthrie and Wes Wilson share with their thoughts on the impact of COVID-19 on design and architecture.

On an optimistic note, the unusual spatial practices demanded by the crisis may bring new awareness to the importance of design. “Being told to practice social distancing and isolation are extremely important in this crisis, but they have rendered some public spaces empty, others—especially those out of doors—better used than ever,” write architects Avery Guthrie and Wes Wilson of Teeple Architects. “At the same time, spaces such as healthcare environments and food and pharmaceutical retail are critical to our ability to survive this crisis. Finally, we are reminded of the importance of domestic space; for many, their homes will be the only spaces they experience for long periods, whether this is a family home, a student dorm room, or a shelter bed.”

“Fundamentally, this is a reminder of the importance of good design at all scales.”

60 Richmond Street East Housing Co-op has been named by Azure Magazine one of the “10 Projects that Defined a Decade of Canadian Architecture.”

Want to solve the housing crisis? Build 1,000 of these. When 60 Richmond Street welcomed its first residents in 2011, the striking building – defined by a play of colourful, interlocking volumes – represented the Toronto Community Housing Corporation’s first new co-operative in 20 years. Teeple Architects’ design exemplifies urban infill. Its resident-run restaurant and training kitchen animate the street (while providing an income source for residents), and its central courtyard creates a sociable green space, with waste from the kitchen and restaurant used as compost for the communal gardens.

According to principal Stephen Teeple, the design was driven by the firm’s interest in “intriguing banalities, where everyday things can be inspirational.” At 60 Richmond, everyday life is a canvas for an expressive design. As the decade unfolded, Teeple’s social housing portfolio expanded with buildings at Alexandra Park. The results, once again, were admirable. It’s affordable housing with a sense of community – and architectural flair. In the 2020s, we’ll need much more of it.
