The Stanley A. Milner Library recently received LEED Silver certification from the CaGBC. Creating a more sustainable building, and achieving this stringent green building certification was a central part of the project. Initiatives undertaken were: diverting waste from landfills during demolition by recycling and reusing as much existing materials as possible; reducing overall utility consumption by installing energy-efficient mechanical and electrical systems and high performance building envelope; use of low-emitting materials that were procured within 800km of the site whenever possible; and promoting more sustainable modes of transportation by creating better access to the light rail transit system, adding bike racks and car charging stations.
