The Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse in Peterborough, Ontario, is a living symbol of the Sisters’ divine mission and their shared life as a community of spiritual women. As a result, the design process was a true collaboration in which the architecture carefully transcribed the gracious faith of the Sisters, their service to humanity as well as their commitment to ecology. Clad in white cement panels, the curved surfaces of the building seemingly float above the earth-rooted, locally quarried dark limestone base. The building is sited and configured to extend outward toward the surrounding community, reflecting the Sisters’ community outreach efforts.
