This early childcare centre is situated along a ravine park in suburban Toronto. The building is oriented towards the edge of the ravine to take advantage of light and views, while the shape of the building mimics the natural contours of the site. The childcare centre is viewed as a conceptual extension of the site itself—topography intended for play. As an entry point to the Birkdale Ravine, the building provides an ideal vantage point for children to explore and learn to appreciate the natural environment. Feature bay windows allow toddlers to enjoy views of the park and playground beyond, while the exposed wood structure on the interior provides a rich textural backdrop for all the playrooms. The building is synthesized with nature, which is expressed through the building materials as well as the twin tree columns, which carry the roof over the main play room.
